Notes

Family knowledge as related by William John Roberts b.1895:

“Henry ROBERTS b.1866… he was a rogue a thief a villain and he liked his drink, he would regularly mount his pushbike and cycle from Cefn To North Wales to visit his family, leaving his wife and children to fend for themselves, the journey wouldn’t be a continuous one he would work on farms on the way up, he would sleep rough, getting a small payment and food off the farmers. (he was very good at ‘dry stone walling’) it was on one of these trips in “1926” he was found dead in a barn near North Wales, he had been there for about three days before the farmer found him. My grandfather and two of his brothers went up to identify the body, and bury him, in Llangybi where his mother was born”.

Note by ColeValleyGirl : He actually died in Eryri Hospital in Caernarfon, but may have been found in a barn as described; and he was buried in Caernarfon.16

Notes:
3 possible Henry Roberts born circa 1866 in Llanllyfni were found in 1871 and 1881:

1. Henry Roberts age 7 living in Pant Du Terrace, Llanllyfni with his mother Jane born abt 1825 Clynnog and his brother Robert born abt 1854 Llanllyfni. Jane Roberts is a widow and as Henry Roberts' father is alive at his marriage in 1884, this is unlikely to be the correct one.

In 1881, Henry Roberts age 17 Quarryman is still living with his widowed mother Jane (born abt 1824 Clynnog), but now at 9 Halfway Terrace Talysarn.

2. Henry Roberts age 6 living at Buartha, Llanllyfni, an orphan lodging with Jane Jones widow b 1827 and her children John, Richard and Anne. As Henry Roberts' father is alive at his marriage in 1884, this is unlikely to be the correct one.

In 1881, this family is at the same address and Henry is shown as Henry Jones son (of Jane Jones), age 15 born Llanllyfni.

3. Henry Roberts age 5 living in Pant Du Terrace, Llanllyfni with his parents Griffith (1837 Llaniestyn, Labourer) and Jane (1830 Llangybi) and sister Elleanor (1860, Llanllyfni). This is the most likely match.

In 1881, there is a Henry Roberts born 1866 Llanllyfni, Farm Servant at Ynys Goch, Llanaelhaearn, Pwllheli. As the other 2 candidates are accounted for in 1881, this is most likely "my" Henry.7

Notes:
From Brian Roberts:

Harry worked at the Albion Colliery located in the village of Cilfynydd half a mile south of Abercynon, one mile north of Pontypridd. The Albion was the scene of the second worst disaster in the South Wales Coalfield. At 4 o'clock on Saturday 23 June 1894, a massive explosion on the Groves level caused by the ignition of coal dust killed 290 men and boys, and 122 horses. Despite 16 men emerging from the disaster with their lives, only five of these survived

The ‘shift’ that was underground at the time of the explosion was the ‘shift’ Harry should have been on, but Harry being Harry, or so the story goes, had met an old friend on the Saturday morning from North Wales recently moved down, and was in one of the local pubs when the explosion happened – drunk!!16
