Notes:
The 1939 register gives his date of birth as 29 January 1892 but this is probably an error -- January 1891 fits with the 1891 census and the birth registration.5,1,2,6

Worcs Regiment and then Machine Gun Corps (57th Company)

Notes:
He enlisted into the Worcs Regiment (regt. number 24446) (apparently at the same time as his brother Robert: regt. number 24447) and later transferred to the Machine Gun Corps (regt. number 4533) where he became an acting Sergeant.

(An analysis of attestation dates for soldiers with close regimental number suggests that he attested in July-September 1915 -- i.e. not in the first wave of eager volunteers but in the wake of the National Registration Act and before the Derby Scheme and later conscription.)

In 1917, he was awarded the D.C.M. for gallantry in action. The citation read:

"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He kept his gun in action under fire in spite of heavy casualties. He stood by his gun during an intense bombardment during a threatened counter-attack, and by his coolness and courage greatly assisted in repelling the attack."

I have not been able to find a service record or pension application for him.7,8,9,10
